Resilience Leads To Brilliance, Courage Is The Key

"You just can't beat the person who won't give up" - Babe Ruth

Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is the ability to act in spite of it.

A phenomenon I've always been curious about is why certain people are able to act on their goals and ambitions, while others can't. What is it that holds certain people back from chasing their dreams? What differentiates those who say they want success, from those who actually do what's required to make it happen?

Most people talk a big game, but very few take action. Everyone says they want the high paying job, the new car, the gold Rolex, the six-pack, the luxurious holidays, or to live debt-free, but very few are actually prepared to work for it - day in and day out, month after month, and year after year.

So why does this happen? What's the differentiating factor between the doers and the pretenders?

From what I can see, it's because too many of us lack resilience. We lack grit. We lack determination. We aren't willing to do whatever it takes to achieve our dreams.

But the thing with resilience, is that no one can do it for you. No one can create resilience in you. It has to come from within. You have to find the motivation to commit to your dreams. You have to develop the burning desire work harder than anyone else, and push through roadblocks as you face them. Because you will face them.

There will be times where you'll want to give up.

There will be times where you'll fail.

And there will be times where it all seems too hard.

But resilient people don't give up in the face of adversity.

If you want to develop greater resilience to finally chase those dreams that you know you're capable of achieving, then there's a few things for you to be aware of.

Allow me to coach you towards building more grit:

Know Your Worth

A lot of the time, we're held back from chasing our dreams by fear. Fear of judgement, fear of what others might say about us, and fear of failure. We might be scared that we won't be taken seriously, or we might even be wrestling with feelings of low self-worth. How many of you have ever felt undeserving of living a big life? I know I have before.

Before you can build your resilience and change your life, it all starts with self-confidence. It starts with knowing your worth. Every single one of us have something special and unique to offer this world, and that includes you too. Don't waste your talents or opportunities because you're scared of what someone else might be thinking or saying about you. Who cares. The ones talking about you are the ones doing nothing in their own lives.

When people try to push you down (and they will), it's your job to stand up tall. You'll find courage in drowning out their voices and staying true to yourself - staying true to your values, goals and ambitions. Just because they've given up on their dreams, doesn't mean you have to give up on yours too.

Who cares what others think about you. You have one life to live, and as long as you're happy, that's all that matters. If you've been holding yourself back from the world because of fear, this is your permission to let your light shine bright.

"I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear." - Nelson Mandela

Train Your Brain

To build your resilience, you're going to need to get used to training your mind. This will involve a lot of positive self-talk, especially in moments of insecurity or doubt. When I go into a situation that I'm nervous or unsure about, I like to recall a time in my life where I successfully navigated a similar circumstance. Be your own consultant, and shoot down your own insecurities each time they pop up.

Resilience is about being able to persevere in the face of adversity, no matter how many thoughts of giving up run through your mind. Focus on your long-term goals or visions for your life. How do your daily actions at the micro level, contribute towards your dreams at the macro level? The day you plant the seed is not the day you eat the fruit. Resilient people know this and are able to think long-term. When you play the long-game, it's a lot easier to focus on where you're heading, rather than the immediate obstacle that's in your way at any given moment in time.

There'll be plenty of hurdles for you to overcome on your journey, so be ready for unexpected challenges. Each new challenge is an opportunity for you to level up, and become a better version of yourself. Remember your long-game.

Winners never quit, and quitters never win." - Vince Lombardi

It Takes HUGE Action

Whatever goals or visions you're working towards, you must take HUGE, consistent and committed action, every single day.

No amount of quotes, vision boards, motivational speeches or events will get the work done. You simply have to do the work. No one else will do it for you.

People often fool themselves into thinking they're taking action by attending events or researching for days on end, but really, they're just procrastinating from taking real action. They're hedging their bets, because they're "not ready" to act. The truth is, no one is ever ready until they give it a crack. At some point, you must simply do. Step out of your comfort zone, and go all in. You will fail along the way, but that's how you learn. You can't learn unless you get started.

Sure, you might need a little spurt of inspiration or to educate yourself before you can embark on a new task. But remember, the successful ones are the doers, the ones who are willing to step outside of their comfort zones despite their fear.

Commit now, and work out the details as you go. Stop pretending you're taking action, when you're really not. Going all in is scary, but it's what's required if you want to live a big life. Be unapologetically ruthless in your pursuit for action. Be committed, and do whatever it takes.

And most importantly, don't compare yourself to others. This is your race, and your race alone. Chasing your dreams is about being better than you were yesterday, it's not about being better than anyone else. You're only competing with the person in the mirror.

“It's supposed to be hard. If it were easy, everyone would do it.” - Tom Hanks

Let Go Of Your Ego

When it's all said and done, achieving your dreams is going to take sacrifice. And a hell of a lot of it. That means you're going to have to let go of your desire to be perfect. Imperfect action is better than inaction. It's your ego which holds you back when you strive for perfection, so it's time to let that go and get ready for vulnerability.

You can always make another edit to your book, re-write your article, change an image or play around with fonts. You can always take another photo or film another clip, searching for the "perfect" light. You could redesign your logo or mull over business names for months, but none of these activities are going to help you achieve your dreams. You need to focus your energy on what actually matters, and complete meaningful work. Stop distracting yourself with superfluous tasks in the pursuit of perfection. It won't serve you well.

Get your work out there to the world and let the market be the judge! There's no "right time" to release a project, and no "perfect moment" to begin working on your goals. All we have is now, but that's all we need. Stop making excuses, and get it done.

"It always seems impossible until it's done." - Nelson Mandela

Grit, determination, resilience and courage develop over time. It will take work, but it's what's required in order to live a big life.

If you've read this article to the end, you should be proud of yourself, because there's something inside of you that wants more for your life. Something tugging at you to do more, to be more! And it's your job to turn that timid whisper into an avalanche of action.

You can have whatever it is you want in this life, you just have to be prepared to work for it.

Resilience and courage will be your keys.
